The American M.D and preacher Thomas Staughton Savage and naturalist Jeffries Wyman first portrayed the western gorilla (they called it Troglodytes gorilla) in 1847 from examples got in Liberia. The name was determined from Greek Γόριλλαι (Gorillai), implication "tribe of furry ladies", portrayed by Hanno the Navigator, a Carthaginian guide.
